Enlightenment and Healing

I recently wrote an article for the Breastfeed! Chicago blog entitled “Englightenment and Healing”. The article discusses the experiences breastfeeding both my children, the loss I experienced when breastfeeding didn’t go as planned with my son, but the lessons learned through that experience and the healing that came with breastfeeding my daughter. The article challenges us to look for the positives even in difficult situations and recognize that enlightenment often comes from experiences we do not particularly want.

“Breastfeeding Failure” is an Oxymoron

I have recently written an article titled “Breastfeeding Failure” is an Oxymoron. Best for Babes has published it on their blog.

I’m so saddened every time I hear a mom say she “failed” at breastfeeding when, more often than not, that woman has done everything within her power to breastfeed her child. Our langauge is so important–both the language we use when talking to others and the internal dialogue we have with ourself.

Biological Nurturing

Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending a seminar by Suzanne Colson in Ottawa in which she introduced her concept of biological nurturing. I will be getting a brief overview of what I learned written up in the next few days, but in the mean time, take a look at the Biological Nurturing website if you haven’t already. What I love about Suzanne’s approach and research is the recognition of breastfeeding being a biologically normal process and that babies and moms both come to the relationship with innate responses and reflexes. The key is to provide environments, positions, and the belief to allow these responses to be expressed and then to let it happen. And this, in my opinion, is where we are getting derailed. Breastfeeding, Take Two Now Available!

I’m so happy to announce that Breastfeeding, Take Two is now available. The book is slowly working its way onto online retailers and is available from most sites right now. I have as of this morning, scene it listed on sites in Canada, USA, France, UK, Norway, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. The “official” release is still a bit away, but if you’ve been waiting for a copy, they are now available.
